When you answer the phone, do you know what the person at the other end of the line is calling about? Typically not, right? Therefore, do you know what God will call you to do before he proclaims your calling to you? And if you know what your calling is before the Lord tells you, how can it be from the Lord?
Your calling is determined by your Creator and is not limited by obstacles of man, and it is quite possible that your calling is nothing that you ever imagined. You may be called to do something you have never experienced before, or to go to serve in a country you have never even visited. If you’re walking in the Holy Spirit, communing with Jesus and reading God’s word throughout every day, then you will know the voice of the Lord your God. He calls the chosen and equips them, so don’t let the Enemy trick you into feeling like the calling is too difficult, too far away, or too lofty, and certainly don’t allow yourself to be limited by what others may think of the calling that God has laid on your heart.
Your calling and giftings are part of your eternal inheritance as a believer, and Christ desires nothing more than to lavish you with this inheritance of the gift of himself in you in its entirety. Why then would you allow others to influence your relationship with the Lord by asking them what they think of your calling? This is between you and God, and as long as you are sifting it through the discernment of his Word, then you will know if it’s true and from him.
As it says in Hebrews, chapter 9, when Jesus Christ was sent in human form as a sacrifice for our sins, he became the mediator of this new covenant. The new covenant allows us to receive our promised eternal inheritance since we were set free from the sins we committed under the first covenant, the Ten Commandments. To be clear, our eternal inheritance given by God is the indwelling of Holy Spirit, Emmanuel, God with us.
If you are mature enough in your faith to hear, then ask him what your calling is. If he doesn’t answer you yet, keep working the fields to prepare for harvest, and keep your heart and eyes open to the amazing adventure that he is calling you to live the short time you are on this earth.
